Edward Miller and Company –
Removable Founts.
Like all better lamps, Miller made his with removable or detachable founts.
This is a guide to the styles of embossing used through-out the production of this No. 2 sized central draught lamps.
Patent dates on founts relate only to the wick raising mechanism, not the fount itself. I am yet to locate a patent date on a removeable fount itself. Patent dates also exist on the burners (see a detailed study of the Miller No. 2 central draught burner).
I have dated each fount for when it was introduced into production from both the patent dates, and the dates known from the lamps that they are typically found on and other available information. They are estimates. Further, as these founts are interchangeable, a lamp should NOT be dated or even identified as Miller from its fount.
I welcome any comments regarding this subject, additional information or evidence that correction is required.
